Darwin’s Route: Cruising through Patagonia ABOARD THE STELLA AUSTRALIS OR VENTUS AUSTRALIS
DAYS 1-4 USHUAIA TO AGOSTINI SOUND From Ushuaia, cruise to legendary Cape Horn, often referred to as the “End of the Earth,” and explore this rocky promontory overlooking the turbulent waters of the Drake Passage. A choice of hikes at historic Wulaia Bay leads you through enchanted forests to panoramic viewpoints. Shore excursions bring you to the Pía and Garibaldi glaciers, and in Agostini Sound, see the glaciers that descend from the Darwin Mountains. DAYS 5-9 MAGDALENA ISLAND TO USHUAIA Explore the Magellanic penguin colonies of Magdalena Island and the Tuckers Islets, and choose from a variety of guided hikes in Ainsworth Bay, with its prolific birdlife and elephant seals. After another excursion to the Pía Glacier, cruise past “Glacier Alley,” where a dramatic parade of tidewater glaciers flows down to the sea. Your journey ends with more explorations in Cape Horn National Park and Wulaia Bay. Dock in Ushuaia on Day 9 and disembark.
Retrace the route of Charles Darwin aboard HMS Beagle on an expedition cruise through the secluded Fuegian Archipelago at the bottom of South America. The adventurous itinerary includes legendary Cape Horn and historic Wulaia Bay, the spectacular fjords that harbor Pía and Águila glaciers, the boisterous penguin colonies on Tuckers and Magdalena islands, as well as impressive Glacier Alley. You’ll also encounter massive ice fields, lush sub-polar forests, and secluded beaches on islands that remain refreshingly remote and barely touched by civilization, a rare glimpse of what planet Earth must have been like before mankind. This can also be taken as a 5-day extension to our Small Group Adventures in Patagonia, and is available from Punta Arenas or Ushuaia.
