Total Eclipse of 2026: Northern Spain

WILDERNESS TRAVEL SPECIAL EVENTS PRESENTS

Total Solar Eclipse of 2026 NORTHERN SPAIN

August 2026

DEAR FRIENDS OF WILDERNESS TRAVEL,

Join us in Northern Spain on August 12, 2026, to witness the awe-inspiring drama of a total solar eclipse as it sweeps across the Iberian Peninsula. Occurring fewer than 70 times each century, a total solar eclipse is one of nature’s most exquisite phenomena. As the moon gradually obscures the sun, the world transforms: the sky darkens, temperatures drop, and the radiant solar corona becomes visible to the naked eye. It’s a spectacle that leaves an indelible mark on those fortunate enough to witness it.

Our carefully planned adventure combines the eclipse with the delightful cultural and culinary traditions of Spain. We’ll commence in Bilbao, celebrated for its architectural marvels and deep-rooted Basque heritage. We’ll explore the city’s vibrant Old Town, tour the iconic Guggenheim Museum, and learn about the region’s traditions from local historian Professor Alberto Santana, who hosts a popular series on Spanish public television. We’ll then visit the renowned Atapuerca archaeological site and explore the historic streets of Burgos before arriving in Lerma, a charming town graced with medieval architecture and a laid-back ambiance. Our exclusive viewing site is at a nearby hilltop winery with sweeping views of the Meseta Norte, perfectly aligned with the eclipse’s centerline. Throughout our journey, our distinguished astronomer and long-time eclipse partner Dr. Alex Filippenko will provide invaluable insights into the total solar eclipse and the mysteries of the universe. Following this eclipse program, which we designed to accommodate 120 participants, we’ll offer a variety of special tours, each limited to 12-15 participants. Whether it’s hiking in the Spanish Pyrenees or along ancient trails in Basque Country, making a pilgrimage on the famous Camino de Santiago, exploring the rugged coastline of Northern Spain, or venturing to the remote exotic islands of Madeira and the Azores, there’s something for everyone. We hope you’ll join us, but don’t wait too long as space is limited. Visit our website for more information and download the Detailed Itineraries of the Post-Eclipse Adventures.

Eclipse Day

ECLIPSE VIEWING CONDITIONS Working with former NASA

meteorologist and renowned eclipse expert Jay Anderson to select an ideal location to maximize our eclipse viewing prospects, we settled on what we think is one of the most promising locations along the entire eclipse path. It offers sweeping views in the direction of the approaching eclipse. The Cantabrian Mountains to the north should block the clouds normally found over the Bay of Biscay. At the same time, it is far enough west so we don’t have to worry about the cloudiness that can blanket the Mediterranean coast at this time of year.

LOCAL CONTACT TIMES FOR OUR PLANNED VIEWING POSITION AT 42° 9.431 ' N, 3° 54.319 ' W: 1st contact (eclipse begins) 19:33:35, altitude: 18.5° 2nd contact (totality begins) 20:28:39, altitude: 8.4° 3rd contact (totality ends) 20:30:25, altitude: 8.1° Sunset 21:21 4th contact (eclipse ends) 21:22:00, altitude: -1.1° Duration of totality 1 minute and 45 seconds

OUR EXPERT ASTRONOMER ALEX FILIPPENKO, PHD A distinguished astrophysicist and professor at UC Berkeley, Dr. Alex Filippenko has made significant contributions to our understanding of the cosmos. Dr. Filippenko’s exceptional research has earned him the highly coveted Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics, showcasing his pioneering work on the accelerating expansion of the universe. His dedication to education is equally impressive, having received the Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization, demonstrating his commitment to sharing the wonders of the universe with the public. He’s been voted the “Best Professor” at UC Berkeley a record nine times, has over 700 scientific publications, produced courses with The Great Courses , co-authored an award winning textbook, has appeared in many episodes of The Universe documentary series, and continues to inspire and shape the next generation of astronomers while unraveling the mysteries of the cosmos. He has experienced 19 total solar eclipses, joining Wilderness Travel for 14 of them, and he will join us again in 2026 for his 21st eclipse!
